I've had the pleasure to work with dozens of individual clients alongside hundreds of individuals on camps, national squads, training weekends and at hundreds of group sessions.  The individual clients have come in all shapes and sizes, ages from 8 to 75 and from novices trying to start exercise through to elite world champions.  They all provide their own unique challenges and the work is immensely rewarding. Click on the drop down links for full info on some fusion-coaching supported athletes or read what they have to say below. I can't remember anyone ever getting slower or injured but don't take my word for it!!!

SIAN TOVEY

I first met John in 2002. An unfit medic who had done a bit of biking, could run very slowly and could barely manage 25m in the pool without drowning. If it had been any other coach I would not of lasted long in the world of triathlon  - in fact wouldn’t of even got as far as entering a race (the whole swimming thing is kinda important!).

However John is unique. His greatest talent in coaching lies in his ability to motivate and inspire you to levels that you never thought you could achieve. His enthusiasm for the sport and for improving his athletes is infectious and his delight when you achieve your goals is obvious. I was hooked.

Fast forward a few years and 3 IM later it is very different. I can swim, my biking has made huge gains by specific powermeter coaching and I can now run fast enough to do a 3:40 IM marathon and finish top 5 in age group in IM France. This is all down to Johns’ ability to tailor my workouts to suit my strengths, weaknesses and to fit round the demands of a fairly busy job.

I am looking forward to more of the same in 2009!

ROBERT HERON

Having given up on triathlon many years ago, due mainly to a complete inability to run without injury, I decided to ask John if he thought a return to action would be possible.  I’d known John for almost 10 years having been on the periphery of Glasgow Tri since its merger with David Lloyd Tri Club, so I was well aware of his knowledge and coaching abilities, and knew he was the man to ask.  John looked me up and down, and still answered yes!

A thorough functional assessment followed by a programme of specific exercises for a few weeks and I tentatively laced up the trainers. It wasn’t long till I was running 3 times a week.  I would’ve been happy with that, but that was only the start; 6 months later I ran a 4:40 marathon at IM France.  One of Johns major coaching assets is identifying weaknesses and resolving them.  I think he identified my weakness for beer when we set that goal!!  But it worked better than I could’ve hoped.

In short, attention to functional detail and a specific progressive training plan fused to an honesty and enthusiasm that I think goes unmatched, not only got me running for the first time in years but got me through an Ironman……. and looking forward to another in 2009.
