Scotlands fastest Ironman Graeme Stewart (8 hrs 35mins 7 secs) is coached by fusion-coaching. Coming on board just a few months before his key target race of IM Austria it was immediately apparent to me that Graeme had huge unleashed potential. What was needed was a thorough needs analysis and a rigorous programme in place that established consistency and adressed all aspects of performance. We adopted a scientific strategy of testing and controlled training using SRM power cranks and GPS system for running. Trainng load was controlled closely and progressed based on weekly improvements and a highly periodised programme. In just 12 weeks a massive 12% power improvement was observed and run times dropped 20 secs / mile in training. Toeing the line with a solid consistent pace and nutrition based race strategy Graeme executed fantastically all day sticking to his strategy and delivering a great result. Since then we've seen further improvements and we are now well into prep for the 09 race season with a more comprehensive and long term plan in place. This guy has plenty more to come. On July 13th 2008 I finished 10th at Ironman Austria. Just 4 years earlier I finished 20th in my first ever sprint triathlon in Aberfeldy and a year before that at the age of 25 I finished my first ever athletic event, a ½ marathon. Before that I had been a fit teenager but since the age of 21, very inactive after breaking my back in a car accident. The last 5 years have been quite a journey and my progress has taught me that if you have the determination you can achieve things far beyond your current expectations. I’ve also learned that it can speed things up considerably if you seek help when you feel you need it and get things right as soon as possible.
Everyone has different goals when they seek coaching, from completing their first short triathlon to world championship medals (mainly Kirsty on that one). For me it is simply realising my potential at Ironman triathlon, which is no mean feat for anyone working full time. Any age-group athlete considering devoting a considerable amount of their precious free time to sport should seriously consider how they are going to make the most of this time and ensure it’s not wasted.
John’s coaching is highly individual starting with my ambitions and how and when I want to train. He has then looked at me in detail as an athlete and turned this in to a bespoke training schedule that fits around my lifestyle. The training is specifically tailored to my goals with added elements to target specific limiting factors and technique flaws. For instance, he is has helped me start overcoming my poor range of motion, stemming from my back injury which has been limiting my swimming potential since the start. I’m confident that no two of his athletes programs will look the same although they will share common elements of consistency and hard work. I'm also confident of fulfilling my potential in following seasons.
